Obituary of Ione Diedrich McCarter

ROCKFORD - Ione Diedrich McCarter, 89, passed peacefully from this world Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, to return to her Father in Heaven and to join her beloved husband, "Mac," and son, Gregg, and other family members.
She was born in Minneapolis, Minn., July 14, 1916, to Herman and Ella Diedrich. Ione was a licensed practical nurse, and worked for many years as a surgical scrub nurse at the "old" Saint Anthony Hospital. She was an avid bridge player and golfer. Ione was one of the first Rockford residents to undergo open-heart surgery. She was a caring person with a gravelly voice and a wonderfully upbeat sense of humor. All who knew her could count on a good time when she was around.
She was survived by her son, Wayne (Marlene) McCarter; brother, James Diedrich, Minnesota; former daughter-in-law, Vickie (McCarter) Hilker; grandson, Matthew (Miriam) McCarter, and granddaughter, Jennifer (McCarter) Marxx. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hermann and Ella Diedrich; sisters, Margaret and Dorothy; husband, Melbourne "Mac" McCarter; and son, Gregg McCarter. The family wishes to thank the staff at Amberwood Nursing Home and Swedish American Hospital for their compassionate care of Ione.
Memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Friday, March 3, In Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, 3910 N. Rockton Ave., Rockford, IL 61103, with the Rev. David E. Beauvais officiating.
