Adoption
Samuel Newcomb, cousin to William's mom had a son William Newcomb who died as an infant. William was then either adopted or as one source states "bound out" to Samuel Newcomb and appears to have stayed with him through his childhood. Samuel lived with William and his family in old age and left his estate to William Gaines.Census

The farm value is $3500, machinery $100 and livestock $800. $100 was spent on fences, building or repairing. $100 was spent on labor for 16 weeks of the year. Farm production total value estimated at $475. There were 20 acres of mown land, 30 acres of hay and 6 horses on hand. 22 cows on hand with 5 newborn, 3 sold. Those cows produced 500 lobs of butter. 27 pigs were owned and 41 barnyard chicks. Those chickens produced 250 dozen eggs. 9 acres of Indian corn produced 400 bushel 4 acres of oats produced 100 bushel. 30 acres of rye produced 400 bushel. 7 acres of wheat produced 80 bushel. 1/2 acre of Irish potatoes produced 35 bushel. 1 acre of apple trees with 12 bearing trees produced 15 bushel of apples. 27 cords of wood were cut.Civil

IN his later years he moved to Oregon where many of his children and grandchildren lived. In 1905 his daughter Mary Ella with husband James visited Oregon for the Lewis and Clark or Portland Expo. William would have been 80 years old, wonder if he attended the spectacular event?Burial
William is buried at Oakland Cemetery, very rural, a beautiful place.Occupation
