Mary Ella Gaines was born in Iowa, the first child of William and Sarah Swain Gaines. Mary Ella grew up on a farm, attended school and was married at age 24 to James D Miller. James and Mary Ella had a family, farmed and in 1905 visited the Lewis and Clark Expo in Portland, Oregon.
