Hiram STEVENS

In 1850 Hiram is living with his father and family in Chemung, McHenry County, Illinois.
In 1860 he is married and his family (Adelpha, Frank, Earnest, Fremont) are living in Chemung under the indexed surname Severns, family 2109, dwelling 2178. Living with them is a sixteen year old Henry Severns, Hiram's brother, born in Ohio.
On 15 August 1862 he enlisted as a Private in the Civil War while a resident of Chemung. On 4 September 1862 he mustered into Company E, 95th Illinois Infantry Regiment. Hiram died on 8 February 1865, aboard a steamer ship traveling between Eastport, Tishomingo County, Mississippi and Cairo, Alexander County, Illinois. Although recorded as dying of typhoid pneumonia/inflammation of the lungs in Cairo, the officer-in-charge, 2nd LT A. J. Alderman, certified that he actually died enroute and that he died in the line-of-duty from injuries to his chest suffered while loading the steamer at Eastport. His enlistment indicated his Hair: Light, Eyes: Blue, Complexion: Fair, Marital Status: Married, Occupation: Farmer, Nativity: New York, Joined By Whom: Asa Farnam, Period: 3 years, Muster Where: Rockford Ill.

Marriage
On 18 February 1854 their marriage license #1276 was issued. On the 21 February 1854, they were married by Alain Brown, Justice of the Peace, Book A, Page 32 in McHenry County, Illinois. Marriage certification is also contained within Civil War pension papers.
Death
Civil War pension records record that as a result of a fall on a boat between Eastport, Mississippi and Cairo, Illinois he died of typhoid pneumonia (another report indicates inflammation of lungs).
