Individual Details
William Fredrick Wittgow Sr.
(16 Apr 1833 - 10 Dec 1916)
The family immigrated to America on the ship Bremen departing from Bremen, Germany, and arriving in New York on 25 May, 1868. Since Ellis Island was not yet open, they were processed through Castle Garden. They rode an immigrant train to Nebraska and first settled in Snyder. In 1874, Charlotte (spelled Scharlott on the land entry papers) filed for a homestead patent and the family moved to Howells in Adams Township in Colfax County. The family moved to the Stanton area in 1888. The children grew up in a home and attended gammar school and church where only German was spoken.
Although some sources give his name as William Gottleib Wittgow, no official documents have been found to verify that. William's death certificate and obituary both state his name as William Fredrich Wittgow.
