J. Hughes, 91 Years Old, Dies at the Home of His Son
James J. Hughes, at the age of 91 years and two months, passed away at the home of his son, Almon Hughes of Roberts, on December 7, 1933. Mr. Hughes had been a resident of Roberts and the community for 35 years. Although he had been apparently in good health, he gradually became more feeble and his death was caused by the infirmities of old age.
James J. Hughes was born on October 7, 1842 in Ontario, Canada. In the year 1866, he went to Waterford, Minn., where in 1874 he was married to Caroline Partch. They continued to live at Waterford where Mr. Hughes worked as a carpenter and also manufactured brick, part of which were used to build the Carleton College at Northfield, Minn. In 1898 he came to Wisconsin and settled in the community of Roberts, where he continued his trade of carpentry and was also a stone mason and plasterer. As the family grew up, they bought land and began farming. There were eight children born to Mr. and Mrs. Hughes, one daughter passed away in infancy. On December 25, 1925, eight years ago this Christmas day, his wife, Caroline, passed away and since that time, Mr. Hughes has resided at the home of his son, Almon. A resident of this community for so many years, Mr. Hughes could well remember when one could stand on a hill and count a dozen breakers plowing the soil where there only existed brush at that time.
Mr. Hughes is survived by his seven children, one daughter, Mrs. John Germain of Boardman, and six sons, Elden of Chicago, Miles, Ernest and Walter of St. Paul, Lee and Almon of Roberts, besides 30 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Manson Hughes of Hudson and one sister, Agnes Karnes of Red Wing, Minn.
Burial was made in Willow River Cemetery.
