Funeral Monday for Nelson J. Hughes
Funeral services for Nelson J. Hughes, former resident of St. Joe township, were held Monday morning at 9 o'clock from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Joseph McGee of Houlton, and 9:30 from from St. Michael's church, Stillwater. Members of the Stillwater G.A.R. and the Woman's Relief Corps attended in a body and acted as an escort to the cemetery. A firing squad of national guardsmen fired a salute over the open grave. Interment was made in the family lot at Bayport cemetery.

Nelson J. Hughes who lived with his son, A.M. Hughes, in this city for a number of years, died at Seattle, WA., April 28th following a stroke, age 88 years, three months and six days.
Deceased was born in Morrisburg, Ontario, Canada, January 22, 1846, and when less than 19 years of age came to the states and enlisted in the Federal Army, serving until the close of the Civil War. After his discharge he returned to Canada and joined the Canadian forces for a year's enlistment during the Fenian Uprising. He then returned to the states and settled first in Hudson Prairie where he lived until 1867 when he moved to Stillwater, where in 1871 he was united in marriage to Miss Catherine Hynes. They lived in Stillwater until moving to a farm in St. Joe township, St. Croix county, where they lived until 1918 when they moved to their home at Houlton, where in 1922 celebrated the 50th anniversary of their marriage. Mrs. Hughes passed away the following year. For about 3 years after the death of his wife, Mr. Hughes lived with his son, A.M. Hughes, in Amery, Wisconsin and since that time he had made his home with his daughter Mrs. Joseph McGee, at Houlton.
Mr. Hughes traveled extensively the past few years, attending all National G.A.R. Encampments and visiting cities from coast to coast and from the gulf to and into Canada. Always self-reliant and asking nothing that he would not repay many fold. He had been commander of the Stillwater G.A.R. Post and some two years ago he was commissioned Aid de Camp by the Commander-in-Chief of the Regional G.A.R. He was an honorary member of the Legion and V of F.W. and held other offices of honor and trust.
Mr. Hughes had spent the past three of four winters in Los Angeles, Calif., and taking the ocean route to Seattle was in route to Sasketchewan, Alberta to visit a daughter before coming to his home in Houlton when he suffered the stroke which terminated his robust life.
The remains were brought to Stillwater and later to Houlton where the funeral was held with military ceremonies from St. Michael's Church and interment made in the family lot in Bayport, Minnesota.
Surviving him are three sons, Alvin of Amery, William of Stillwater and Edward of Fond du Lac; six daughters, Mrs. Joseph McGee and Mrs. James Frawley of St. Joe township, Mrs. Edwin Phalen and Mrs. Martin Boyle of Shaunavon, Sask., Canada, Mrs. James Doyle of Coteau, N.D., Mrs Katherine Magney of Minneapolis; 42 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Mr. Hughes, who was the father of A.M. Hughes of this city, lived here with his son for a number of years and has a host of friends who mourn his passing.
