Death
HAMPTON - Helen Regina Furr Hargrave passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, at the age of 86, in St Mary's Hospital in Richmond, Va., surrounded by her loving family. She was a resident of the Peninsula for more than 60 years and had moved to Richmond in 2009 to live with her daughter, Sharon Cole. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar G. Furr Sr. and Ethel Bradley Furr; her loving husband of 54 years, Joseph Marvin Hargrave; her brother, Oscar G. Furr Jr.; and sister, Rebecca Breeden. She is survived by sisters, Elizabeth Fleming of Pine Knoll Shores, N.C., and Mary Alice Breeden of Fishersville, Va. She is also survived by her four cherished and devoted daughters, Phyllis Barfield (Bob) of Smithfield, Sharon Cole of Richmond, Debbie Woodward (Michael) and Lynn Kirkland (Bill) both of Hampton; four grandchildren, Corry Cole (Claudia) of Rocky Mount, N.C., Michael Barfield (Carrie) of Grafton, John Jones (Carmen) of Chesapeake and Sara Kirkland of Hampton; five great-grandchildren, Gibson and Alex Cole, Dylan Barfield, Jackson Jones and Amanda Cartwright; and many nieces and nephews. Her daughters were her most treasured gifts along with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Helen retired from the US Postal Service in Hampton after 21 years of service. She was a longtime member of Ivy Memorial Baptist Church in Hampton. She had a compassionate, care-giving nature for her family and many friends. Her favorite hobbies were morning walks, bird watching, gardening and caring for her many pets over the years. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, in the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home chapel, Hampton with the Rev. Mr. Robert B. Giovenco officiating. Interment will be at the United Methodist Church cemetery in Wakefield, Va. The family would like to thank the very special staff of CVICU at St. Mary's Hospital for their compassion and excellent care of their mother.
