Death
Richard C. Furr, of Merritt Island, Florida, died Friday, January 2, 2009. Having retired from the Navy at Norfolk, Virginia, Mr. Furr moved to Leesburg, Florida, in 1962. He was born in Augusta County, Virginia, the son of Loyd Furr and Margaret Fix Furr. He was employed at Du Pont Company in Waynesboro, Virginia, for seven years prior to joining the United States Navy on October 8, 1940. He did 22 years active duty, serving in the Pacific area during World War II and also served during the Korean conflict. He was chosen from his company aboard the United States Ship Columbus for the around the world Cruise after the war. He visited and shook hands with Pope John Paul in Rome. During the cruise, he was in the receiving line to welcome aboard King George VI and Mother Queen Mary and had the honor of shaking hands with both. He is survived by his wife, Katie Furr of Merritt Island, Florida; a step-daughter, Betty Robertson; a brother, Ed Furr, both of Waynesboro, Virginia; five step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; two nephews and one niece. Beyers Funeral Home of Leesburg, Florida, is in charge of arrangements.Published in the Charlottesville Daily Progress on 1/3/2009
