Notes
Death
Mrs. Belle Virginia Furr, aged 63 years, wife of A. I. Furr, of East Waynesboro, was instantly killed and others badly stunned when struck by lightning standing on the porch of the home of Mr. Duncan on the Oscar Martin farm at Adial, Va., Wednesday afternoon. A party consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Furr, their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Andes and two children, all of East Waynesboro, had gone to Adial early in the day, where Mr. Andes was called on business. Later they called at the home of Mr. Duncan, and while standing on the front porch, lightning struck with fatal results. Mrs. Furr was thrown from the porch, which is about four feet from the ground, and other members of the party were stunned and burned. A strange freak of the element was noted in the tact that the bolt did not strike in one place, but ran through the various rooms of the house. In one room the ceiling was broken through, in another a bed was set on fire, joists were pulled apart and there was general wreckage to the dwelling. A horse standing in a field about four hundred yards from the house and a dog under the porch were killed. The storm was entirely electric, not one drop of rain falling in the section. Mrs. Furr is a native of the Pleasant View neighborhood, and moved here with her family about a year ago to make her home. She is survived by her husband and six children; Mrs. J. E. Cupp, of Spring Hill; Mrs. W. B. Andes, of Waynesboro; Mrs. J. E. Berry, of Staunton; Mrs. E. P. Coiner, of Fishersville, Wm. E. Furr, of Staunton, and Boyde Furr, of Fishersville. Funeral services were conducted from Pleasant View church, near Staunton, Wednesday morning at eleven o'clock, Rev. Couser, pastor of the Waynesboro Presbyterian church, officiating. Interment in the adjoining cemetery. The News-Virginian, Waynesboro, Virginia, August 20, 1926
