Death
Mrs. Bessie Alma (Furr) Coiner, 99, of 500 C St., died Wednesday evening (March 8, 1989) in King's Daughters' Hospital after a short illness. She was born in Augusta County Feb. 4, 1890, a daughter of Abraham Lincoln and Bell Virginia (Key) Furr and had lived most of her life in Staunton. She was the oldest member of St. James Lutheran Church of Fisherville and was the widow of Eugene P. Coiner, whom she married in 1910. Survivors include two grandsons, J. Eugene Hubbard and D. Ensor Hubbard, both of Baltimore, Md.; four great-grandchildren, Lauri, Jeff, Britta and Shelley Hubbard, both of Baltimore, Md.; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rachel Coiner, who died Jan. 13, 1915; another daughter, Eugenia Coiner Hubbard, July 1949; her husband, Eugene P. Coiner, in 1937; and one stepdaughter, Helen Coiner. Aunt Bess, as she liked to be called by her friends, spent most of her life helping others. She was at one time employed by Virginia Metalcrafters of Waynesboro, King's Daughters' Hospital and in later years was housemother for licensed practical nurses in Staunton. A service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in St. James Lutheran Church by her pastor, Jeff May. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Charles Furr, Jimmy Furr, Wyatt Furr, Bill Ellinger, Richard Coiner, Carl Coiner, Tom Bartley and Ward Lee Cohron. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 tonight at the Henry Funeral Home.
