Nick's sudden death came as a shock to all of us. According to daughter, Merrianne: "he had ben having some heart issues and his Parkinson's was getting worse. He was failing, but not the point that any of us expected him to die. He went to the grocery store and sat down on a bench inside the door, presumably to rest a minute, and never got up. Massive coronary."

Nicholas J. Pappas, Union Carbide Chemist
A memorial service for Nicholas J. Pappas, a chemist who worked on the Manhattan Project at Union Carbide Corp. in Niagara Falls, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Central Presbyterian Church, Main Street and Jewett Parkway. Pappas, 80, of Williamsville, died Monday (July 1, 2002) in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst, after a brief illness. He retired in 1986 after 34 years with Union Carbide. The Brooklyn native graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1943 with a degree in chemistry. Active with Central Presbyterian Church, Pappas served as a member of the Session and the Board of Deacons and as president of its Community Service Corporation. He also was a member of th VPI Cadet Corps, the Yankee Club and the American Chemical Society. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, the former M. Janice Maxon; a daughter, Merrianne Orndorff of Baltimore; a son, James of Miami; and four grandchildren. [Cardinale].
