Andrew M. DIERDORFF

(19 May 1798 - 10 November 1877)

Per Vanessa Stern: 1997: Andrew and Katherine emigrated to Lee Co., IL. in 1854. Andrew was a farmer and a miller. He and his wife were members of the Big Conewago Congreg. while they lived in York County. Andrew joined the Church of the Brethren at the age of 28., progressed through the Deacon's office, and various degrees of ministry and became an elder in 1858. He was the elder in charge of several churches in the Lee Co. area. He was on the committee for arrangements for the annual meeting in 1866.
Besides preaching at the Franklin Grove church, he also preached at the meeting house in Ashton and apparently kept there, an old family bible, in German, which he used as a pulpit Bible. When the church was abandoned, his son, Solomon, got the bible, and his (adopted) daughter, Alice (Lott) gave it to her cousin, Daniel T. Dierdorff, of Surrey, North Dakota.

Andrew M.'s will, dated Jan 17 1876, witnessed by Philip and Elizabeth Runyon of Bradford Twp, named Henry and Andrew K. Dierdorff as executors. After giving his wife, Magdalena, the use of the homestead during her lifetime, household goods and his watch, one cow and one hog and $400 in cash, he directed his executors to sell the real estate and personal property remaining and divide it equally between the 10 children. (The Nickey boys to share in the 1/10th share of their mother, Elizabeth)

Text of obituary as it appeared in "The Brethren at Work", 29 Nov 1877: Elder A.M. Dierdorff: Andrew M. Dierdorff was born in York Co., PA, 29 May 1798, but did not unite with the church until in his 28th year and was elected to the deacon's office 6 years afterwards, was chosen to the ministry in the year 1838 and emigrated to Lee Co., IL in 1854. He was ordained in 1859, served in that capacity with honor to himself and church until within the past year, he requested to be released from the most active part of which is still living and four of his sons hold responsible positions in the church.
On the 10th, he ate his dinner as usual but complained a little of feeling somewhat unwell, and was his custom, went and laid down on a bed. He called for someone, but in less than 15 min. he was dead and thus passed away with but little suffering.

Material furnished by Daniel Dierdorff and Levi Trostle.

Andrew M's farm was just east of Franklin Grove, and was occupied by a grandson for many years after his death.

From "Misc. Notes on the Deardorff Family", From the Collections of the Riley County Genealogical Society, Manhattan, KS: 1850, Hamilton Twp., Adams Co., census, age 52.
