Cave-in Kills FourSuffocation And Drowning Are Causey 0f Deaths At Filter Plant Excavation
Bridgeport, Nov, 17. — The bodies of four men who met lingering death from drowning after a cavein had imprisoned them beneath earth and debris at the bottom of an 18-foot filter plant excavation near here were recovered late today. Two men who escaped death when the sudden earth glide buried their companions were under care of physicians tonight in a hospital in Decatur. J. C. Bearden, 20, former Bridgeport High School football player, was caught and buried by the slide but was rescued by the frantic efforts of workmen before the rising water in the pit had reached him. After finding the other men were dead, the rescuers ceased efforts to extricate them until the sandy wall of the excavation had been braced with timbers to prevent a second cavein. The dead: Bud Shawn, 26, laborer, married. Claud Mader, 29, married and with two children one a week-old baby. Nolan Gober, 21, laborer, married one year tomorrow. C. H. Furr, 54, carpenter, married with three children. The bodies were at the Hawkins Undertaking Parlor in Bridgeport tonight while arrangements were being made for a mass funeral probably tomorrow afternoon.
