(25 Nov 1895 - 12 Jan 1944)
SLAVE OF THE CIRCUS FOR THREE LONG YEARS
Charlotte Youth, Who Claims to Have Been Abducted by Show, Now on His Way Home.
From Columbia State.
Claiming that he was taken away with a dog and pony show from Charlotte about three years ago, a young man, about 17 years old, giving his name as Franklin A. Furr, was given medical attention at police station yesterday and will probably leave for his old home some time today. Furr came to Columbia from Augusta by foot. He ran away from the dog and pony show and is seeking his family, who, he says, lived at the time of his departure near Charlotte, in the vicinity of Pineville, N. C. The show with which young Furr says he has been traveling during his absence is a small tented affair. . He was used as a laborer. According to his story told last night, it was by his own will that he went on the road with the show. When he saw his chance to escape about two weeks and a half ago he did so, starting out immediately for his home. He has not written or heard from any of his people since his departure. He says his parents were preparing to move to another place near Charlotte when he left and not knowing where they went to he has not had any communication with them. He is very anxious to locate his relatives. Pineville where they were is between Fort Mill and Charlotte. Furr was unwell and was consequently given medical attention at police station. He loafed around the place most all day. According to the ex-showman, he received no pay for his services as laborer, but was furnished with clothes and board. His travels have been extensive, the show having continually been on the road since he left Charlotte these many months ago. He will leave for Charlotte by foot or possibly by rail most likely today.
