Gary Furr states "My Uncle Vance performed with J.E. Mainer who was from Concord, and a quite famous early predecessor of bluegrass and old-time music. The Mainer Brothers’ music (including brother Wade, who just died at over 100 years) is mentioned in the august Bluegrass: A History by Neil Rosenberg (University of Illinois Press) I wrote a blog piece about Wade’s death here

Death
CONCORD — Vance Lee Furr, 74, of 107 Eva Drive, died on Friday, Oct. 12, 1990, at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel, Concord, conducted by the Rev. Kenion Coleman. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will beat the funeral home on Saturday night from 6 to 8. Born Feb. 10, 1916, in Mecklenburg County, Furr was a son of the late Allison Weaver and Nettie Keziah Furr. He was a retired carpenter. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Crayton Furr; two daughters, Nancy Williams of Mount Holly and Rebecca Furr of Kannapolis; a son, Vance Lee Furr Jr. of Mount Holly; three sisters, Sarah Miller of Landis, Louise McAbee of Kannapolis and Carolyn Taylor of Spencer: three brothers, Rodney Furr of Danville, Va., Paul Furr of the Enochville community and A.W. Furr of Stone Mountain, five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.Endnotes
