Thomas Leroy FURR

(24 Apr 1898 - 17 Apr 1966)

There are two different death dates for Thomas, May 1965 in Jackson, Hinds Co., Ms. and Apr 1966 in Port Gibson, Claiborne, MS. I'm pretty sure he died in the Veterans Hospital near Jackson, MS., though not positive. He left home at the age of 14 after his Dad didn't buy him a pair of pants to attend some kind of neighborhood social (I was told). He served in the army during WWI. In fact he and My Daddy met up in France during the war. They were standing in a double chow line waiting to go to the front lines when one of them looked over in the other line and there was his brother. I know that was a special reunion as they were only about 18 months apart in age and had always been very close as brothers. Uncle Leroy married Lady McFatter. They had no children of their own but adopted a son, T L "Snookie" Richard and a daughter, Joyce Ann. I don't know Joyce's last biolobical (sic) name but she told me she had located a sister but the sister didn't want to pursue a relationship. Snookie served in the Navy during WWII and he and his wife located in Baton Rouge after the war. I think they had a couple of children. He died very young of a heart attack. I haven't seen his widow in many years. All that I know is that her name was Betty. I think A T Jr may have seen her since Snookie's death. Joyce Ann got cross wise with the family over a misunderstanding about no one attending the funeral of her Mother. I for one didn't know of her mother's death until it was long passed. I finally got in touch with her by asking the sheriff to send someone to her home to check on them. I apologized sincerely to her but I guess that was not accepted as she and her husband never attended another of the family reunions. I learned at the reunion this past May that Joyce Ann had passed away. I'm sorry about that as I would liked to have parted on friendly family terms. But some things one has no control over. Family talk (gossip) has it that Uncle Leroy was into "boot legging" during probhition (sic). From digesting all the information I'm convinced the gossip is true.
