Winnie Lee FURR

(15 Jun 1910 - 28 Mar 2006)

My Aunt Winnie Lee is one of the sweetest, kindest people I have ever been around. I have visited in her home many times during my life and was always made to feel very welcomed. She and Uncle Major were two of my favorite people. Uncle Major ran a "bumble bee" sawmill much of his life. They later ran a dairy. After Grandpa Furr's death she and Uncle Major and their two children, Kenneth and Daisy Elois moved in with Grandma Furr and aunt Winnie Lee took care of Grandma Furr until she died. Aunt Winnie is the only one of my blood ancestors still living. She is living with Daisy Elois and her husband now (December 2004). Uncle Major was one of the wittiest people I have ever known. He almost always had something amusing to say about any subject. He owned a school bus in addition to the saw mill and always provided well for his family. He and Aunt Winnie Lee ran a dairy on the old Furr place for a number of years. They were both hard workers. When Aunt Winnie Lee was a yoyng teenager (16 I think) she went to spend the night with a friend close to home one Sunday evening. Said she was going to church with her friend thet night. But instead she and Uncle Major had a plan. He picked her up and they eloped to Natchez where he had arranged with a preacher to marry them. But it had rained and the roads (mostly dirt in those days were in terrible shape and they didn't get to Natchez, a distance of about 50 -60 miles, until the wee hours of the morning and the preacher had left and gone to bed. Aunt Winnie said that he tried to get her to sleep with him as he had made an honest effort to do the right thing. But she declined and they were married the next day. When Grandpa heard about it he drove to Natchez to bring Aunt Winnie Lee, their baby, home. But she and Uncle Major had gone somewhere and when they were a ways from where they were staying Uncle Major spotted his car and turned off on a side street and they waited until Grandpa gave up and left. I guess the preacher did a pretty good job as they were married for over 60 years before Uncle Major died. Just goes to show you that it's best to start out a marriage on the right note. I think the world would be better offf today if more of our young people would realize this. I know a lot of children would be better off. Uncle Major and aunt Winnie had 3 children. The first one was still born. I didn't know that until a few years ago when while at a funeral in the pleasant hill cemetary I spitted a grave marked Lessing Infant. Since Uncle Major was the only Lessing I knew I asked Aunt Winnie Lee about it. She said it had been a forceps delivery and the baby was delivered dead. She said that Uncle Major told her that the doctor had broken the baby's neck because he had its little neck pop. They are both passed away now but their two children are still living. Kenneth is living in Georgia and Daisy Elois lives about 10 miles from Pleasant hill.
