Death
MOUNT PLEASANT - Mrs. Patsy Loretta Furr Barrier, 65, of 8860 Bowman Barrier Rd., died Sunday, August 3, 2008, at her residence. Funeral service will be 4 p.m Tuesday at Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, officiated by Rev. James White; burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Barrier family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday evening at Gordon Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant. Mrs. Barrier was born July 13, 1943 in Cabarrus County, daughter of the late Matthew Matthias Furr and Laura Mae Furr Furr. She was a member of Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity. A star basket ball player at Harrisburg High School and avid sports fan, during her senior season at Harrisburg High she routinely scored 20 or more points and had a career high 37 points. She turned down an athletic scholarship to play basketball at NC State to marry her sweetheart who also turned down an athletic scholarship to play football at Duke. She loved watching her children and grandchildren play sports at Mount Pleasant High School, and loved her Duke Blue Devils and Atlanta Braves. She helped coach two women's softball teams to state championships. She was active in her church and community. Lately her passion centered around spending time with family and friends on Lake Tillery. She loved times spent at "The River House" She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Bill Furr, Earl Furr, Faye Harwood and Agnes Furr. She is survived by her husband, James H. Barrier; sons Henry (Matt) Barrier and wife Jill, James (Dan) Barrier and wife Patricia, daughter Wendy Duke and husband Ed all of Mount Pleasant,;brothers, Jack Furr, Levon Furr and wife Terry, Jerry Furr and wife Maxine all of Concord, Harold Furr and wife Judy of Indian Trail; sister, Lorene Easley and husband Harold of Lake Tillery; grandchildren Jacob, Matthew, Rachel and Brett Barrier, Brady and Baby Duke.
