Death
FURR Albert L., 78, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1993 in Atoka, Ok. Born Jan. 13, 1914, he was a lifelong resident of Atoka County. A veteran of World War II, he served as crew chief with the 439th Troop Carrier Group in Europe. After the war, Furr settled in Atoka where he had a Chrysler, Plymouth and Dodge dealership for 45 years. He was frequently awarded the "Quality Dealer Award" for outstanding sales and service. He was also active in state and local volunteer groups and projects. An active member of the Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Masonic Lodge, First Baptist Church, and the Oklahoma and National Automobile Dealer's Association, he served on the Atoka School Board for over 20 years and was a member of the City Council. As a founding member of the Hiway 69 Association, he was influential in the development and growth of businesses along Hiway 69 in southeastern Oklahoma. He served as a Commissioner of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services from 1983-87 and was Commissioner of the Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation from 1972-76, appointed by governors of the state. He was currently a Director of Eldercare and was appointed by Senator David Boren as board member of the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence in Education. Most important to Furr were his many customers, friends, and family, whom he unselfishly served throughout his life. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Willie Jo Furr, of the home; his children, Rex Furr and wife, Arlene of Dallas, Tx.; Peggy Sharpe and Nancy Parrott of Okla. City; 5 grandchildren, Sarah Sharpe, Courtenay Parrott, Katie Parrott, Allison Furr and Michael Furr; 3 sisters, Grace Kellogg, Ruth Logan, and Mary McEntire; several nephews, nieces and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, at the Atoka First Baptist Church.The Oklahoman, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, January 7, 1993
