Death
Jack Harwood Furr, 69, of 140 Mount Vista Ave., died at his home following a period of declining health. Born in Concord, N.C., he was a son of the late Adam Paul and Fannie Harwood Furr. He was a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C., and retired from Provident Life and Accident Insurance Co. Group Division after 34 years in the Greenville office. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the staff of the Naval Air Transport Service and played baseball with the 12th Naval District teams. He played one season of professional ball with the Oakland A’s and also played American Legion Baseball in Albemarle, N.C., where he was on the 1940 and 1941 National Championship teams. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where he was a former deacon and Youth Sunday School teacher. He was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels for nine years and an avid golfer. He was a member of Greenville Country Club. Surviving are his wife, Frances Eversole Furr; a son, George Adam Furr of Greenville; a sister, Maxine Barringer of Concord, N.C.; and two brothers, Everett E. Furr of Concord and Adam L. Furr of Mooresville, N.C. Omit flowers. Memorials may be made to St. Francis Hospice, 414-A Pettigru St., Greenville, S.C. 29601, or to Greenville County Cancer Society, 113 Mills Ave., Greenville, S.C. 29605. Memorial services: 11 a.m. Monday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2310 Augusta Road, Greenville. Burial will be private.
