Death
CHARLOTTE - Loma Furr Simmons, 99, departed this life on Monday, November 16, 2015, at her home. She was born November 3, 1916, in Charlotte, NC, to the late Alonzo and Jennie Watkins Furr. Loma was preceded in death by husband, Robert (Bob) Newell Simmons and son, Dr. Robert N. Simmons, Jr.; brother, Alonzo Watkins Furr, two sisters: Bettie Louise Thrower and Sarah Belle Wallace. Loma had a special loving bond and relationship with her mother. After graduating from school in Pineville, Loma moved to Charlotte where she met and married Bob. She became a homemaker and devoted her life to raising her two sons. Through this devotion, she became involved with the Mecklenburg County Parent Teacher Association and served as a Cub Scout Den mother. Loma loved the outdoors, landscaping and planting flowers. She especially enjoyed traveling and going to the beach. Loma served for many years as the vice president and secretary of Industrial Laboratory Equipment Co., Inc. She also served as a billing manager for Kenneth Home Fashions. Loma was a member of Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church, Charlotte, NC where she taught youth Sunday school and served as a member of the United Methodist Women. She was also a lifetime member of The Joy Outlook Sunday School class. She leaves to cherish her memory, a loving and devoted son, Harry E. Simmons of Charlotte; a daughter-in-law, Janice M. Simmons of Hickory, NC; a sister, Pauline (Polly) White of Davidson, NC; a granddaughter, Cassie Elizabeth Thompson (Lee); great-grandchildren: Natalie Blair Thompson, Robert Wells Thompson and Katherine Parker Thompson all of Charlotte, NC; and niece Malinda Wallace along with a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation is Saturday, November 21, 2015, at 11:00am followed by service at 12:00pm at Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church, Hawthorne Lane, Charlotte, NC. Interment is at Evergreen Cemetery located at 4426 Central Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28205. A special thank you goes to Mary Black and Denise Smith Johnson for providing their loving assistance and companionship to Ms. Simmons. In lieu of flowers, the family will be grateful for any memorials to be made to Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church, Hawthorne Lane, Charlotte, NC or a charity of your choice. J. B.
