Subject: Sam Furr info!

Bill,
I expect the picture you saw in the Cornelius Compass was the one of Sam in WW1? Here is a little more information on him! Sam was a prominant man in Cornelius for years! He lived on a farm near the Catawba river! (The place is now under Lake Norman!) I think the road now called Sam Furr Rd. ran into the Beatties Ford Rd. near where Sam lived! My Mom still talks about him calling square dances at the local school! His booming voice could be heard blocks away!
Sam has a grandson and several grandaughters who still live in Cornelius! If you like I'll give a copy of your letter to them? I'd like to find out more about him and find more pictures for my collection too!

Sincerely, Jack Conard Jr.

Cow Gores Kannapolis Man Here
A cow that was being brought to market here Tuesday turned on her owner and gored him. The owner, Samuel Monroe Furr, 70, of Rt. 3, Kannapolis, was in serious condition at Presbyterian Hospital late Tuesday. Tuesday was auction day at Morris Live Stock Co., 5100 Rozzelles Ferry Road, and farmers from throughout the area were bringing their cows and bulls to be sold, then slaughtered. Furr brought in his full-grown Jersey cow about 10:45 a.m. Tuesday. Witnesses said Furr backed his truck up to one of the half-dozen unloading docks at Morris Life Stock Co., climbed in the back of his truck and began untying the nervous, 1000-pound animal. Suddenly, she turned on him. The animal's seven-inch horns dug a deep hole in Furr's lower abdomen, puncturing the peritoneum, the internal membrane that covers the stomach and other abdominal organs. The surface cut was three inches long, Presbyterian Hospital officials said. Furr underwent surgery Tuesday afternoon to repair the damage, was listed as being in serious condition. His doctors said he was doing ‘'as well as could be expected.” Nelson Morris, manager of the livestock company, said it was normal for owners to get into a truck with their animals. Jersey cows are nervous animals anyway, he said, and “this cow just reacted.
