Notes
Death
The body of Alfred T. Furr, 40-year old veteran of World War I and a native of Stanly county, was found Sunday afternoon near his home at the intersection of highway 151 and 27 in No, 10 township in Cabarrus county, a week after he left home in search of greens for his evening meal. Coroner N. J. Mitchell of Concord said Monday morning that Furr’s brother-in-law, Jimmy Milton, and brother Clyde Furr, discovered the body lying face down in a field a short distance from the home. The face was buried in mud, and, since Furr was subject to epileptic fits since his discharge from the army last July, Coroner Mitchell said it was obvious that Furr had been seized with a paroxysm, fallen to the ground and smothered. Mr. Mitchell said no inquest would be held, since the death was clearly accidental. Deputy Sheriff Bert Ball and Mr. Mitchell respond to Milton’s call, and their investigation revealed Furr’s ailment. Clyde Furr told the coroner that the war veteran was subject to spells of wandering off alone, and though he was going after greens for supper, no particular thought wad given to his absence at that time. Search made all last week failed to reveal his whereabouts, until the body was discovered yesterday afternoon around 2 o'clock by Milton and Furr. The funeral of Mr. Furr was held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon. It was a simple grave-side service in the cemetery at Locust. A native of Stanly county, Mr. Furr was the son of Mrs. Sophronia Furr and the late John Furr. He had lived in the Midland community for the past 10 or 12 years. Before entering military service, he worked as a section foreman on the railroad. He is survived by his wife and three children; three brothers, Clyde, Rufus, and Pete Furr, and four sisters.Stanly News and Press, Albemarle, North Carolina, February 22, 1946
