26 Jan 1905 John W. Popwell was appointed postmaster of the District of Sterling, Tuscaloosa Co, AL. This post office was discontinued soon after his appointment (so marked in the margin). The next note is: Effective 31 Oct. Mail to Berry, Fayette Co, 8 Sep 1905. No other appointments follow.

John W. Popwell, P.O. Berry, AL wasborn Nov 11, 1842 at Christions Creek (it was Chestnut Creek) in Autauga Co, AL. Entered the service as a private on Sept 1861 at Montgomery, AL. in Company B of the 1st Alabama Cavalry. Discharged at Camp Douglass, 1865.
Note: Camp Douglas was a Union Prison near Chicago, but in the summer & fall of 1865 was used by the Union Army as a mustering out point for Union Army volunteer regiments.

1907. Applied for his Confederate Pension. John W. Popwell of Tuscaloosa County - served in Co B. of the 1st AL Calvary (sic). Enlisted 10 Sep 1861 in Montgomery and was discharged on 8 Jun 1865. He was wounded in the battle of Moss Creek in Tennessee. He cannot work on account of asthma. He was 64, and his post office was RFD 1, Berry, AL. Signed: John W. Popwell, on 28 Jun 1907. Witnesses on 9 Jul 1907 were D. A. Kemp and E. Mims. Approved by Board of Examiners on 16 Aug 1907.
