Individual Details
William Harmon
(Ca 1758 - )
There was a William Harmon taxed on Crooked Creek, Montgomery Co VA from 1782 to 1789. It has been speculated that he was a son of Jacob & Sarah Lorton. He did not go to Kentucky as early as some of the family. Because he appears to have a John Harmon in his household in 1787, he has been assumed to be either John's father or his elder brother. Without knowing William's age there's no way to know. With such a common name it is also impossible to know if the William Harmon in Virginia was the same man as the William Harmon later in Pulaski Co KY. They may have two men of the same name. Neither created many records.
The Montgomery Co tax list for 1787 has William and John Harmon, listed on Aug 7th - William then listed as a poll over age 21. John Harmon was listed but then struck out because he has a mark in the 16-21 age column - a young James Howell Jr received the same treatment on this page. The Byrds and Burchs - John's in-laws were also paying tax in Montgomery Co in 1787 and this is the year that John married Elizabeth Byrd in December. There was no marriage permission for John so presumably he had turned 21 between August and December. This roughly coincides with his oft quoted birth year as 1767.
In 1793, William Harmon with a single horse was taxed in Wythe Co next to John Harmon and William Burch [probably John's father-in-law]. This was the first year tax was recorded for Wythe. He hasn't been found in Virginia records after this year.
William is said to have died about 1794, Pulaski Co KY, but I think this is an assumption because he disappeared from there. ?Married Jenny Gibson. Certainly one of Jacob & Sarah's sons married Jenny. I believe it to have been an earlier marriage for Israel, not for William. Israel testified in 1802 in Livingston Co that Jenny Gibson, daughter of Isaac Gibson, had been the mother of Steven, Samuel & Sarah Harmon. Some have concluded that William was her husband - others suspect this was an earlier marriage for Israel, and I agree with the latter. Israel married Keziah Thompson in 1788, and the children of his first marriage might have been left with their grandparents in Pulaski Co. Later both Stephen and Samuel will join Israel in Livingston Co.
Jacob Harmon paid tax on 100 acres that William Harmon had entered and surveyed. No one is sure who this really William really is. Is he the same William who lived on Crooked Creek in Montgomery Co VA and seemed to have a John Harmon in his household in 1787? Is he a son of Jacob and these were indeed his children that his grandfather raised after William died? Did William simply leave for some other place after surveying the land? No patent has been found for the 100 acres, nor any disposal of this tract.

For the years 1787-1797, Jacob, as Jacob Sr., had been taxed in Lincoln Co KY
Pulaski was actually formed out of Green & Lincoln Counties in 1798.
The 1799 Tax list, Pulaski Co KY
Jacob Harmon, 100 acres, Sinking Creek, Entered & surveyed for Wm Harmon.
2 males over 21; 2 males 16-21; 2 horses
By 1800, Jacob was not claiming the land and had 2 males over age 21, 3 horses.
After that year, Jacob appears to have gone to Livingston Co where his son Israel was living.
It is possible that the William who surveyed the 100 acres in Pulaski also relocated to Livingston Co.
Tax Records 1803: William Harmon with one male over 21, no land and 1 horse.
William "Harmer"" married Susannah Ferguson on 1 Nov 1804 by Terah Tamplin (aka Templin) and the bond for "William Harmon" and Susannah Ferguson was dated 29 Oct 1804 with bondsman John Johnson.
