Individual Details
John Harmon
(Maybe 1757 - )
This person is inserted as a placekeeper - he is not a proved son. No document has been found that indicates Jacob and Sarah ever had a son named John. Other sons are named in various records - but not any son John. It is likely he did not exist or if they had a son John, he died young before leaving any records. He is often identified as the wrong John Harmon. I have left him here to be able to add these notes.
This is the John most often said to be John L. Harmon who married Elizabeth Byrd, 16 Dec 1787, in Montgomery Co, VA. This is an incorrect identification. John L. Harmon was at least ten years younger than this man. NSDAR has listed John L. Harmon as a patriot, but as is the case with many of the earlier accepted applications, it is also mis-identified as a John, born 1750. The births of the other children in the family of Jacob & Sarah, do indicate that a John could have been born in the 1750's rather than 1767, as was John L. Harmon. However, I believe all the births of the children of Jacob & Sarah to be estimates. John L. Harmon was not old enough to create the Rev War service record. And Y-DNA has shown that John L. Harmon isn't a descendant of the same person as descendants of Jacob.
Further research has shown that the John Harmon in the Revolution was in all likelihood, the younger brother of Jacob (b. circa 1748) - not his son. Additional details are on his page.
It is also true that by 1787 when John L. Harmon married in Montgomery Co, VA - Jacob and Sarah Lorton had already gone to Lincoln Co, KY. They were briefly in Montgomery County but did not remain.
1800 Second Census of Kentucky Online at Ancestry.com, which is actually a tax list since there is no existing census for Kentucky in 1800:
Jacob Harmon was listed as paying tax in Pulaski Co, KY, 28 July 1800. No John is listed. And no record has been found to prove that Jacob had a son of that name.
