John W. Hayes
(17 May 1903 - 20 Jul 2004)
Posted at findagrave.com: Hayes, John W. Age 101, of Redondo Beach, California, formerly of Hamilton passed away very peacefully in his own bed in his own home on Tuesday, July 20, 2004, with family present. He was born in Fresno, California on May 17, 1903, the son of James Franklin and Oliva (Turner) Hayes. While still an infant, his family moved back to Jackson County in Kentucky where he lived until his move to Hamilton when he was in his early 20s. He was educated in a one-room school house in Kentucky. He was the 4th of eight children. He is survived by three of those siblings, all in their 90s: Sara Bybee of Cincinnati, Ed Hayes of Gray Hawk, KY and Helen Blackmore of Brooklyn, New York. A long time resident of Hamilton, he had been employed as a supervisor for Mosler Safe Co. for 20 years and National Can Company for 28 years. He was a member of St. Clair Avenue Baptist Church and was a 65 year member of the Masonic Order. He married Hope Allen on September 28, 1929. Hope preceded him in death in May, 1971. He later married the former Jewel Alford in 1972. She preceded him in death in November, 1998. In 1998, he moved to his home in Redondo Beach where he could be near his children all of whom live on the west coast. Although he lived in California only six years, he still made many friends just as he had while living in Hamilton. He was both mentally and physically vital until his death. He loved telling people how old he was, and he never met a stranger. Besides his siblings listed above he is also survived by son Willis Dean Hayes of Hermosa Beach, California, daughter Joyce Ann and her husband Keith Harn of Redondo Beach, California, and son James Douglas Hayes and his wife Gillian Diane of Redmond, Washington. Last but not least, the light of his life were his two grandsons John Russell Hayes and Jeffrey Allen Hayes, also of Redmond, Washington. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 26, 2004, at 10 A.M. at Weigel Funeral Home, 980 N. W. Washington Blvd. with Rev. Michael Holmes officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park. There will be visitation at the funeral home on Sunday, July 25, from 3 P.M. to 5 P.M. The family requests that instead of flowers friends may send a donation in honor of John to their favorite charities or churches.
