Oliver Thomas Kirkpatrick

On the 1900 U. S. Census of Clay, Hardin Co., Iowa Oliver appears with his wife Arabellie and children Elizabeth C., Lillian C., Thomas E., Carlos W. and Oliver C. Their months of birth and year are entered. Oliver is a farmer. Elizabeth is a teacher. Oliver and Arabellie have been married 20 years. She is the mother of 5 all of whom are currently living.

On the 1920 U. S. Census of Waterloo, Black Hawk Co., Iowa, Thomas Kirkpatrick age 71 appears with his wife Arabelle age 64. Neither are employed. Their son C. William [Carl Whittier] age 33 and single lives with them. He is superintendent of a necktie factory. Perhaps he is working for his brother-in-law Robert Pedersen.

Stricken at 8 a.m. Today at Home of Daughter here; Was 75 Years; Never Previously Sick. Death came with shocking suddenness at 8:30 a.m. today to Oliver Thomas Kirkpatrick at the home of a daughter, Mrs. R. C. Pedersen, 1408 Grant avenue, where he had gone yesterday to visit for a couple of days. Following a hearty breakfast he walked towards the kitchen sink to get a drink but while on the way fell backwards. His daughter caught him, breaking his fall. Death came instantly, due to apoplexy. He had previously been to all appearances perfectly well. It is worthy of note that Mr. Kirkpatrick never was ill in his life and he never had had a physical. He was 75 years old.

Lived Here 18 Years. Born in Pike county, Ill., Feb. 16, 1848, Mr. Kirkpatrick, when a small boy, was taken by his parents to southern Iowa, where he grew to manhood and where his father, a minister of the Methodist Episcopal church, was a pioneer circuit rider, riding long distances over the sparsely settled country and preaching at central points. On Feb. 24, 1880, Mr. Kirkpatrick was united in marriage with Miss Arabelle E. Leach, at Troy Millis, Ia. He and his bride came immediately afterwards to Cedar Rapids. Later they moved to Hardin county. Eighteen years ago they came to Waterloo and lived at 908 Conger street.

Leaves Five Children and Widow. Mr. Kirkpatrick lost a brother in the Civil War. He was too young for enlistment but helped in other ways. Surviving besides the widow, are the following children: Mrs. J. E. Swisher, Ann Arbor, Mich.; Thomas E. and Carl W. of this city, and Oliver C, at home. Two brothers, Prof. E. A. Kirkpatrick, Fitchburg, Mass., and Charles K., living in Oregon, also survive.
The remains are at Petersen Bros. undertaking parlors awaiting funeral arrangements.
