Waterloo Daily Courier, Waterloo, Iowa, Sunday, January 13, 1952, Page 6, Cols. 4 & 5: Insurance Man In Cedar Falls Takes Own Life. Body of Carl W. Kirkpatrick Found Hanging in Attic of Building. Cedar Falls---The body of Carl W. Kirkpatrick, 63, Cedar Falls insurance man was found hanging from a rafter in the attic of the Pfeiffer building at 4:50 p.m. yesterday. Dr. Sidney Smith, Black hawk county coroner, termed the death as suicide by hanging. He said no inquest would be conducted.
Janitor Finds Body. The body was discovered by John Hansen, 1104 Bluff street, janitor of the building. Hansen had gone to the attic to locate a leak in the roof. The janitor immediately called police and Police Chief Al Riebe and Sgt. Virgil McCombs answered the call and took down the body. Riebe called a physician who examined the boy and said Kirkpatrick had been dead about four hours. Kirkpatrick, who had an office on the second floor of the Pfeifer building, lived at 2914 Rainbow drive. The three-quarter inch manila rope used by Kirkpatrick in taking his life had been obtained from the back room of a hardware store less than a block from his office, it was established by police.
Financial Problem. Friends of Kirkpatrick in the insurance field here said he had been depressed and worrying over a minor financial problem the past few weeks. It was believed by his friends that the real clue to why he took his life was the fact that he had been shell shocked while working with the YMCA during World War I. He was said to have told one friend a few days ago: "I feel it coming on, I feel just like I did when I was shell shocked." According to his plans when he left home, Kirkpatrick was to have his wife come to the office and help him with book work during the afternoon, as she often had done before. But when he called her shortly before noon, he told her not to come to the office.
Called Friends. Mrs. Kirkpatrick then became worried, and when she did not hear from him by 4 p.m. called friends to try to locate him. It was learned by his office girl that he had not been in the office all afternoon. Kirkpatrick served overseas during World War I with the 27th army division as a YMCA representative. During World War II he was connected with the Waterloo YMCA as acting district secretary. Kirkpatrick was a member of the Cedar Heights Community Presbyterian church and served as the church's treasurer. Mr. Kirkpatrick was born Oct. 24, 1886, in Iowa Falls, Ia., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Kirkpatrick. He lived in Iowa Falls and Steamboat Rock, Ia., for several years before moving with his parents to Waterloo. He was graduated from West Waterloo high school in 1907.Degree from Iowa. Mr. Kirkpatrick received a B.S. degree from the University of Iowa, Iowa City in 1912. He married Miss Ruth Magowan, of Waterloo, July 22, 1922. they had made their home at the Rainbow drive address since that time.
Before and following World War I he served as state boys' secretary for the Michigan YMCA. Shortly after the war he became engaged in the life and general insurance business in Waterloo and Cedar Falls.
