Francis Asbury Kirkpatrick

Francis Kirkpatrick was born 2 September 1833 in Griggsville, Pike County, Illinois. On 1 October 1856 in McDonough County, Illinois, he married Elizabeth Lowe. Francis Asbury died 9 November 1915 in Macomb, Illinois.
Francis Asbury Kirkpatrick (one of a number of Kirkpatrick's bearing this name, after Methodist Bishop Francis Asbury), served in the Union Army as a sergeant in Company C of the 78th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, from September 1862 until June 1865. In an application for pension in 1885 when he was 52 years old, Francis is described as 6 feet, 1 inch in height, with a sandy complexion, hazel eyes and light hair. At the time of enlistment he was a farmer. The pension application originated in the town of Sciota, McDonough County, Illinois. Kirkpatrick states that he was in the 'march to the sea' with Sherman, and that he was discharged at Washington D.C.
His wife, Elizabeth Lowe, was the daughter of Gilbert Lowe and was born near Cairo, Illinois, 14 September 1839. She died 9 January 1914. Both she and her husband are buried in the Cemetery at Blandinsville, Illinois.
There were nine children born of this marriage.
On the 1880 Census of Sciota, McDonough Co., Illinois Francis is with his wife Elizabeth and children Lula, Lewis, Milliard, Edwin, Edgar, Bruce, and Roy. Francis is indexed as Francie. He is a farmer.
