William Berry Kirkpatrick

William Berry Kirkpatrick, a farmer of Blandinsville Township, was born near West Point, Lee County, Iowa, 18 March 1839. He is a son of Joseph and Maria or Mariel (Pratt) Kirkpatrick, and died 29 October 1926, Macomb, Illinois. He removed to Blandinsville Township, McDonough County, Illinois, with his parents in 1855, and settled on section 25, Blandinsville Township. William B. remained at home engaged in the multifarious duties incident to farm life, until the sound of war was heard through the land. Moved with feelings of patriotism, he could not sit by idly and witness the attempted disruption of the union, consequently in the fall of 1861, he enlisted in the army in the 11th Regiment of Illinois Cavalry, and remained in the service three years.
He married Ruby A. Bailey, daughter of Harrison and Harriet Bailey, on 31 December 1868. Ruby died 11 August 1879 and William married a second time to Viola C. Hewett, 6 January 1881. Viola was the daughter of Charles and Cyrena (Alexander) Hewett. Her father was born in Ohio, her mother in New York State, but Viola was born in Illinois. Her birth date was 12 December 1859 and she died 28 March 1954, over 94 years of age, near San Benito in Cameron County, Texas. It should be noted that W. B. Kirkpatrick and Viola Hewett were married in Morrow County, Ohio at Sparta. The marriage record is on file at the county seat at Mount Gilead, Ohio.
William served as a musician in Company I, 11th Regiment of Illinois Calvary in the Union Army during the Civil War. He enlisted in December 1861 and served until 1864. He was involved with his regiment in the battles of Pittsburg Landing (Shiloh), Corinth and Jackson, Mississippi. At the time of his enlistement, he is described as 6½ feet tall, fair complexion, brown eyes, and with dark brown hair. He was a musician and seems by the record, to have served in a number of musical units, viz. "...he has served in brass band organized by General McArthur...", "...in 1st Brigade Band, 6th Division, Grant's Army, by order of Lt. Col. B. D. Meck...". W. B. Kirkpatrick was mustered out at Memphis, Tennessee, at the end of his three year enlistment.
After the war he returned to farming in McDonough County, Illinois. In 1887 he served a term as McDonough County Treasurer. William was a member of the Methodist-Episcopal Church and the Grand Army of the Republic.
There were three children of the first marriage and two children of the second marriage.
William and his three oldest children are on the 1880 Census of McDonough Co., Illinois with his parents, Joseph L. and Merial R. Kirkpatrick.
The 1900 census shows William B., Viola, Clara and Bessie living in Macomb, McDonough County, Illinois. Williams occupation is listed as Justice of the Peace.
