The Grand Island Independent, Grand Island, Nebraska, Monday, October 14, 2002: James E. Cumpston, 66, of Grand Island died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island. Rev. Larry Vider will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell with military honor by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to either the T.V. for Vets Fund at the VA Hospital or to the family.
Mr. Cumpston was born July 20, 1936 at Gothenburg to Frank and Katie (McNeal) Cumpston. He graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1955.
He entered the United States Navy on Jan. 10, 1956 where he served on board the USS Caliente AO-53 in San Diego. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 16, 1959. He entered the U.S. Army on March 10, 1961 and was honorably discharged on July 9, 1974. During his 18 years of service, he served in Germany, Japan, Vietnam, Korea and the United States.
He married Janice Kay Bivens on June 4, 1961 at Silver Creek. Following his retirement from the Army, they made their home in York. In 1985, they moved to Phoenix, Arizona where they lived for eleven years. In 1996 they moved to Grand Island. The last year of his life he resided at the Veterans Administration Hospital.
He enjoyed being a professional Santa Claus and Nebraska football.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and a son-in-law, Jerri Cumpston and Jill and Todd Guthrie of Grand Island; one son, James Cumpston II of Surprise, Ariz.; four brothers, Francis Cumpston of Lexington, Leonard Cumpston of Pittman, N.J., Richard Cumpston of Carroll, Iowa and Donald Cumpston of Weeping Water; one sister, Naomi Prato of Baltimore, Md.; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Virginia Keiser, LaVonne Randal and Wanda Miller; and an infant brother and sister.
