Patrick Flaherty
(12 Nov 1842 - 13 Jan 1926)
Cedar Rapids Republican, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Wednesday, January 13, 1926, Page 15, Col. 4: Pioneer Dies At Home Here Today. Patrick Flaherty Knew City as One House. Death of a "Pioneer among pioneers" saddened many in Cedar Rapids this morning when Patrick Flaherty, 83, years old, succumbed to a three months illness at his home at 521 South First street west.
Mr. Flaherty was born in County Kerry, Ireland, Nov. 12, 1842. He moved to this country with his parents and brother John, who survives him, in 1848. The family's abode was taken up in Peru, Ill. and there they lived four years, before coming to Fairfax, in a covered wagon.
The Flaherty home was made on a 120-acre farm northwest of Fairfax, until 1900. Then Patrick Flaherty moved to Cedar Rapids, to the same address where he lived until his death. He still retained the original deed to his land, given by the government. Its rests in his name now.
The deceased is described as a man who knew many anecdotes of pioneer days and life on the uncivilized prairie. He married Annie Cunningham, who survives him, in Cedar Rapids, Aug. 9, 1872, crossing the Cedar river by ferry boat. When he first came west, the city did not exist except in the form of one small house, constructed near the bank of the river. Small streams flowed into it from the surrounding hills, and all around was wilderness.
Eight daughters and one son were born to Mr. and Mrs. Flaherty. All survive, and were at his bedside at the time of his death, 9 a.m. today. They are: John of Fairfax, Mrs. James Hurley of LaSalle, Ill.; Mrs. A. D. Harrington of Waterloo, Mrs. W. F. McManus of Oklahoma City, Okla.; Mrs. F. W. Rosser of Chicago; Mrs. M. J. Donnelly of this city and Julia, Elizabeth and Nellie, at home here.
Funeral services will be held at St. Patrick's church, at a time to be announced later. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary cemetery. The family requests that friends send no flowers.
