John Foster Kirkpatrick

This man was born 18 January 1818 in Franklin County, Illinois, and was married on 22 October 1843 to Nancy Greenwood a native of Georgia. Because the two children of John Foster of whom we have record were born before his marriage to Nancy, we presume that he had a previous marriage, but nothing is known about his first wife, except that one researcher says that her name is Ruth. It is also reported that John F. married a third time in his old age, but we do not know the name of his third wife.
Since he had a cousin of almost identical age with exactly the same name who was also living in Franklin County, this Kirkpatrick seems to have favored the name of John F., whereas his cousin seems to have preferred Foster. This distinction does not always hold true on documents so it must be used warily. John F. Kirkpatrick was a farmer. In his declining years he lived in Jefferson County, Illinois. We do not have a full list of his children but only the two listed in the 1850 census.
On the U. S. Census of 1860 for Franklin Co., Illinois, John F. and his wife Nancy appear. He is 42 born in Illinois and his wife is 53 born in Georgia. The only other person in the household is C. Christopher age 18, born in Illinois working at domestic farming. There is no section for relationship John F. and Nancy available to fill in.
On the 1880 U. S. Census of Bald Hill Township, Jefferson Co., Illinois, John Kirkpatrick appears with his wife Nancy, son Garrison, daughter-in-law Jane and grandchildren Mary, Sanford, Martha and William. John and Garrison are farmers.
