Garrison Kirkpatrick

(29 Jun 1840 - 22 Jul 1908)

Garrison was born about 1840 and died 22 July 1908. He married Sarah J. Ward on 1 March 1860. The pastor presiding was William J. Kirkpatrick (possibly an uncle). Sarah died 25 September 1921 and is buried in the Ward Cemetery, Jefferson County, Illinois. Garrison saw service in the Civil War in the 110th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was a private in both companies A & B. He seems to have deserted at some point or other -- at least stands accused of it -- but was not tried and was restored to duty. He was apparently captured at McMinnville, Tennessee, paroled by the Confederate authorities and released, but did not report back to his unit or to the authorities of the Union Army. The charge in other words "no longer stands against him, but the record of the fact that he was absent in desertion from on or about February 14, 1863 to on or about January 25, 1864 cannot, however, be expunged. The charge of desertion ... is recorded. " Kirkpatrick enrolled in the volunteers at Jonesboro, Illinois in September 1862 and was mustered out about June 1865.

There appears to be only two children known of this marriage.

In Sarah J. Kirkpatrick's pension papers is a list of those who nursed her in her last illness. These names include William E. Kirkpatrick, her son. Also listed are Martha Hicks, Mary Prior and Velma Roark. These could be daughters, but we do not know.
