On the 1900 U. S. Census of South Pullman Precinct, Whitman Co., Washington, Alice J. Swall appears with her children Benjamin, Minnie and John R. Alice is a widow. She is the mother of 5, 4 of whom are currently living.

Mrs. Alice Jane Swall died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Getchell, in Pullman yesterday morning after a short attack of pneumonia. The funeral will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Baptist church. Rev. A. B. Clark officiating, assisted by Evergreen Circle of which Mrs. Swall was a member. Deceased was born at Mountain View, Calif., July 1, 1855, where she spent her childhood and received her education. She was married on December 4, 1877, to John J. Swall, then a resident of Casterville*, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Swall were early pioneers of this county, coming overland from California and homesteading a farm 11 miles west of where Pullman now stands. Mrs. Swall endured the hardships of frontier life with courage and cheerfulness and worked untiring to give her children with best education possible. Her kindness and lovable disposition endured her to all who knew her and made her the idol of her family. One of her daughters, Mary Emma, died in 1887 and she lost her husband in May 1898. The other children, who survive her are Benjamin A. Swall of Seattle, Mrs. Elsie R. Getchell and John R. Swall of this city and Mrs. Minnie L. Old of Wawawai. Since the death of her husband, deceased has lived with her daughter, Mrs. Getchell, most of the time and has made a wide circle of friends in Pullman.
