W. W. Ristine Resident For Over 60 Years, Passes Away
Pioneer Resident Had Settled In Territory Before Town Of Gothenburg Was Founded
W. W. Ristine, pioneer of the Gothenburg community, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 82 years. He had been a resident of the community for more than 60 years. William Warren Ristine was born near Ottumwa, Iowa, on August 25, 1859, and passed away at Gothenburg Neb., on Dec. 3, 1941. Mr. Ristine came to Nebraska with his parents in 1880, and settled with them on a homestead northeast of what is now Gothenburg. Ann Snell became his bride on Jan. 9th, 1885, and they established their home on a claim in the same neighborhood. Two sons were born to the union, both of whom survive him. Mrs. Ristine passed away on Dec. 13, 197, following which he spent most of his time in the homes of his sons. In his young manhood Mr. Ristine was converted at a revival meeting, held in a sod schoolhouse in the neighborhood, and joined the Methodist church in which he took an active part during the rest of his life. He shared in the blessings and hardships of pioneer days, helping neighbors in times of sickness and trouble, as well as shoring their good times with them. His life was so lived that he leaves a good moral influence which will live after him. Surviving are his two sons, Luther C. of Waco, Neb., and Cecil of Gothenburg, two sisters, Mrs. A. E. Anderson of Champaign, Ill. and Mrs. E. B. Sanders of Portland Oregon; nine grandchildren, many other relatives and host of friends. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the First Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Mearl Smith and Rev. Swanson. Pallbearers were Ed Robison, Carl Courter, Dan Colvin, Rufus Duval, Harm Junker, Ed Berg. Interment was in Grandview cemetery. Gothenburg Times, Thursday, December 11, 1941, Page 1, Col. 3.
