On the 1870 U. S. Census of West Union, Fayette Co., Iowa, Jacob Clayson appears with his wife P. A. and children E.A., T. S., A.l., A. C., and H. J. Also in the household is a housekeeper S. S. Ewer. Jacob is working as an agent for sewing machines.
1880 United States Census 3rd Ward, Osage, Mitchell Co., Iowa shows Jacob, Permelia, Avis C., Attie J., Myrtle and Willie. Jacob repairs sewing machines.
Unable to locate John Clason on the census records in 1900.
He is living in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois on the 1910 and 1920 census records. He is a widower living alone. On the 1910 Census he is a manufacturer of patent machines.
There is a marriage of Jacob J. Clason, age 78 to a Lillian Merckle, age 46 on 3 May 1913 at Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois.
Beaver Dam Argus, Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, October 12, 1922: J. J.Clason an early day resident of this section, died at a hospital in Chicago on Sunday, Oct. 8, 1922 at the advanced age of 88 years. Mr. Clason was the son of the late Benjamin and Marie Clason and came with his parents to this section in 1842, from Steuben Co., N. Y., where he was born. The family settled on a tract of land east of this city, which has since taken the family name and is popularly know as Clason Prairie. The deceased stayed here with his parents until 1856 when he went to Iowa, and for many years resided at various points in that state and Minnesota. For the past 25 years he resided in Chicago. He married twice, being preceded in death by his wife's [wives]. One son William of Minneapolis and 2 daughters survive him, together with one brother Charles of this city and one sister Mrs. M. J. Hathaway of Milwaukee. The remains were brought to this city yesterday morning and taken to the undertaking establishment of McKinstry & Yauman. The interment was at Oakwood Cemetery this morning.
