James DOODY

Sponsors at James's baptism were James Connell and Mary Hennessy.
James ran the family farm in Ardnamoher. From an account of the case of Doody v Doody in the Irish Examiner edition of 30 July 1897, it appears he had purchased it from his father in 1893. This case concerned two brothers from Ardnamoher, who are not named but who are without doubt from James's family. The Irish Examiner piece tells us the defendant purchased the farm from his father upon his marriage in 1893. Both James and his brother Mike married in 1893 but I am assuming the defendant was James as he ended up with the farm (presumably offered to him as he was the eldest son). James had three brothers, John, Mike and Richard, but there is nothing in the account of the case that indicates the identity of the plaintiff. What we do learn from the piece is that when (presumably) James purchased the farm, his brother was given £100 from the dowry that the defendant's wife (presumably Margaret Cull) had brought. The brother then lent James £45 and sold him two cows and a horse for £25 but it appears James did not pay the entire amount due to his brother and was ordered to pay £52 15s.
