Richard DOODY
(17 Mar 1864 - Prob 6 Jan 1943)
Sponsors at Richard's baptism were Daniel Noonan and Bridget Hennessy.
It appears Richard emigrated to the United States in 1888 and settled in Omaha, Nebraska. We are not 100% certain of this but for the following reasons we think it very likely:
Our Richard was a talented sprinter; in 1886 and 1887 there were references in local Irish papers to his placings in races (usually first) and in 1888 there were mentions that he was an entrant in upcoming races but no report of any results have been located. If we look at Ellis Island records we see that a Richard Doody arrived there from Tipperary (not far from Galbally) on 28 May 1888 and was headed for Omaha. Then on 3 July 1888 in the Omaha Daily Bee newspaper the results of a "one hundred yards foot race" include one for an R. M. Doody. In the Irish newspapers Richard was often listed as R. M. Doody so everything ties in nicely. In the Irish papers also, Richard's name is often followed by the word 'Tipperary' rather than Galbally (although he is also described as being from Galbally) so it appears Richard either lived in Tipperary town or was a member of a Tipperary running club prior to emigration. This would explain why his Ellis Island record has Tipperary as his place of origin.
Furthermore the Omaha Daily Bee edition of 11 March 1912 lists the names of a number of local "sons of Erin' who were about to celebrate their birthdays on St. Patrick's Day, including a Richard M. Doody. This ties in perfectly with our Richard's birth date of 17 March. However U.S. census returns give contradictory date information on Richard, such as a date of birth of 29 April 1871 and an immigration year of 1900 in the 1900 census, and ages of 38 and 55 respectively in the 1910 and 1930 censuses. But given that Richard seems to have been the only Richard Doody living in Omaha throughout this period, this information (probably given in Richard's absence) appears to be incorrect and it is very likely that the Richard Doody in the Omaha census returns is indeed our Richard. All the censuses tell us that Richard was unmarried.
From the U.S. City Directories information on the Ancestry website we see that Richard worked as an "agent" in Omaha between 1892 and 1942 (he died in 1943). Knights of Columbanus records from 1902 tell us he was in the "Life Insurance" business so he was probably a life assurance agent. The U.S. City Directories of both 1906 and 1925 describe him as a solicitor which appears to be untrue.
According to his burial record Richard died at the Gilmore Sanitarium in Omaha age 82 (he was actually 78) and was buried on 9 January 1943.
Many thanks to athletics researcher Michael O'Dwyer for the above information on Richard's athletic talent and his likely link to Omaha.
