Individual Details
Michael (Mike) DOODY
(Abt 4 Oct 1862 - 6 Oct 1929)
Sponsors at Mike's baptism were James Curtin and Mary Hennessy.
The birth records of his daughter Hannah and son Michael tell us that Mike was a "merchant" and saddler/harness-maker in Mitchelstown, Co. Cork. Mike later worked in the saddlery business in Cork city, initially at 117 George's St. and later on Lavitts Quay. It is known that the family lived for a time on Lavitt's Quay prior to moving to 10 Belgrave Place, off Wellington Road.
Michael also made footballs and hurleys, as evidenced by his advertisements in The Southern Star newspaper, such as this one from the 10 October 1903 edition:
"GAELS, Look Here ! - I Manufacture Football complete with Bladder from 1s 9d to 10s each ; Hurley Balls from 4s to 2s 6d ; and Hurleys from 4d to 1s ; Best Ash Roots from 1s 6d to 2s 6d each. Please Note Address : MICHAEL DOODY, Saddler and Harness-Maker, 117 George's Street, Cork (near G.P.O.)"
