Michael (Mick) DOODY

Mick inherited the family farm while his three siblings all emigrated to the United States. He and his wife, Maggie, married late and had no children. I was told that the farm was eventually sold to a relative of Maggie's. According to a Co. Limerick Land Registry document (folio number 1154), it appears that Mick sold the farm in two tranches: 12 acres were purchased by a John Hanrahan in 1949 and the rest of the land was sold to a Patrick Joachim Hennessy on the basis that Mick and Maggie were to have a "life estate", i.e., a right to live in the old family home until their deaths. Apparently no trace of the old Doody farmhouse remains.
Mick died of tongue cancer aged 61. According to his obituary in the Limerick Leader edition of 7 December 1955 Mick "in his early years...was an outanding athlete, having been 4-mile Munster champion". The obituary also tells us he was "an active member of the Galtee Battalion [of the IRA] during the Fight for Freedom". A newspaper obituary of Agnes Peters (died 1994), wife of Mick's brother-in-law Tom Peters, states that "her [Agnes's] husband's sister [i.e. Maggie Peters] was married to Mick Doody, a cousin of De Valera's". However, I have never seen any evidence to show a connection between Mick and Eamon De Valera. It is possible the link, if any, to De Valera is through Mick's mother's side as De Valera's mother was Catherine Coll from Bruree, Co. Limerick and Mick's mother was Margaret Cull (the names may be interchangeable) from Skeheenarinky, Co. Tipperary, although Skeheenarinky is not close - about 45km - from Bruree.
