Napoleon Bonaparte Hamp

(25 Feb 1844 - 22 Nov 1910)

Napoleon served in the Civil War twice and was wounded twice.
1. Enlisted 1 Feb 1862 Co. C MI 8th Infantry. Discharged at Annapolis MD Feb 1863. Wounded
2. Reenlisted 29 Feb 1864 with Co K Michigan 8th infantry wounded at Petersburg VA, July 1864 transferred to Vet Reserve Corps Jan 1865. Discharged at Chester PA Sept 1865. (he is listed on the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System as being a member of 2nd battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps---probably the same thing- only lists one enlistment in 8th battalion.

Death certificste says his mother was Harriet Mead. His father's first wife was Mercy Ann Mead and his second wife, and who we feel was his mother, was Emaline Woodford. His death certificate says he was born in 1849 (not 1844 as listed in Hamp researcher info). Informant on death certificate was Henry B. Hamp of Savannah Illinois. Could this be his son Henry Herbert Hamp?

Info on Napoleon from his death certificate and newspaper obit from South Bend IN. Savanna, IL cemetery records from Carrol County librarian Eathel Weidman. Talk with Maude (Hamp) Virgin in Oct. 1984.

Napoleon's Civil War Pension records #90847 include a death certificate for a wife by name of Annie. Date relates to Mary J. and name "Janie" may have been listed incorrectly by Dr. as Annie. There are no other reference to a wife Annie.

In 1965 he is in a list of petitioners for Madison St. Methodist Church, Chester, Delaware Co. PA. He is listed as living in hospital June-September 1865. He was removed without certificate.
