Ruth Keelikolani

LINEAGE
Conflict: Descendants of Prince Keeaumoku I, Hms G65, Chart 8-A-2 and Ahlo et al, Kamehameha's Children Today, p 88 lists father as Kahalaia , but McKinzie, Hawaiian Genealogies, p 40 notes the controversy was settled when "the Supreme Court decided in favor of M. Kekuanaoa." On the other hand, Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 346-347 states that after hearing of the death of Liholiho in 1824, "Luanu'u Kahala-i'a took under his protection Ka-lani-pauahi and Ka-ho'aon-ku Kina'u.... Within a few years, Pauahi became the wife of Keku-ana'oa, and Kina'u of Kahala-i'a. Pauahi was carrying Ruth Ke-'eli-kolani at the time."
Oukah, Hawaiian Royal & Noble Genealogies, p 283 states that "Princess Pauahi was already pregnant when she married Kekuanaoa."
Conflict: He Buke Mookuauhau Alii, Hms G13, p 30 lists parents as Kaoleioku (k) and Keoua (w) [#998].
LIFE
A. Conflict: Rubincam, America's Only Royal Family, p 86 states birth date as 9 February 1818.
B. Her mother died the day after giving birth to Ruth. She was adopted by Kaahumanu (Oukah, Hawaiian Royal & Noble Genealogies, p 283)
C. Kaahumanu was her kahu (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 280). When Kaahumanu died, Keelikolani lived with her father Kekuanaoa and step-mother Kinau.
D. During the year after Kamehameha IV came to the throne (January 1855), he appointed her as Governess of Hawaii, a position she held until her death (Oukah, Hawaiian Royal & Noble Genealogies, p 283).
E. After giving away her son Keolaokalani at birth in 1862, Prince Lot insisted that she ... adopt the younger brother of Kalakaua, and raise him as heir. She named him after her first mate Leleioholani (Kwan et al, Na Lani Kamehameha, p 21).
F. In 1882, the "proud, stern old chiefess" upon learning that Hilo was being threatened by lava from Mauna Loa, said "I will save the fish-ponds of Hilo... Pele will not refuse to listen to the prayer of a Kamehameha." She traveled to Hawaii and ascended the mountain to make supplications to Pele. After she returned to Honolulu, "the stream of fire ceased to move" (Kalakaua, The Legends and Myths of Hawaii, p 42-43).
G. "From both her father and brother she inherited considerable property, and bought even more... In the end, she left all the property to Princess Bernice who died a short time later" (Oukah, Hawaiian Royal & Noble Genealogies, p 283).
H. Conflict: Liliuokalani, Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen, p 109 states death date as May 24, 1884. Rubincam, America's Only Royal Family indicates 15 May 1883.
