LIFE
A. "His name Ka-la-kaua was given to him by High Chiefess Kinau" (Royal genealogical board of the chiefs of Hawaii, G-7).
B. He was adopted by Hoapiliwahine (Liliuokalani's Book of Genealogy, G-1, p 32) and "reared by Kinimaka Leleo and his wife Haaheo" (Pukui, Hawaiian Genealogies, p 78).
C. He succeeded Lunalilo by vote of the people over the other royal candidate Queen Emma (Liliuokalani, Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen, p 43-46). He was elected because Lunalilo had failed to nominate a successor.
"Elected king on February 12, 1874; traveled around the world on the 20th of January, 1881 and returned to his native land on the 29th of October, 1881; was crowned on February 12, 1883; on November 1890, departed Honolulu aboard the American Warship CHARLESTON for San Francisco and on the 20th of January 1891 died in the Palace Hotel in San Francisco" (McKinzie, Hawaiian Genealogies, vol 1 p 24).
D. He was known as the "Merry Monarch" (Oukah, Hawaiian Royal & Noble Genealogies, p 88).
E. He died of Bright's (kidney) disease on January 20, 1891 (McDermott et al, The Last Illness and Death of Hawai‘i’s King Kalākaua: A New Historical/Clinical Perspective, p 60).
Conflict: Genealogies, etc., M397-2-17 states death date as January 17, 1891.
