Lydia Kamakaeha Liliuokalani
(2 Sep 1838 - 11 Nov 1917)
LIFE
A. As an infant, she was adopted by Paki and Konia around the time Victoria Kamamalu was born. Kinau "declared in the presence of my adopted mother, Konia, that a bond of the closest friendship must always exist between her [Victoria] and myself as aikane or foster-children of the same mother, and that all she had would also appertain to me just as if I had been her own child" (Liliuokalani, Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen, p 7).
B. She was "daily companion of Mrs. Bernice Pauahi Bishop, where I was under the kind care of her husband, Hon. Charles R. Bishop" (Liliuokalani, Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen," p 333). She was educated at the Royal Children's School (Oukah, Hawaiian Royal & Noble Genealogies, p 218).
C. She was proclaimed as heir apparent on April 11, 1877 the day after her younger brother William Pitt Leleiohoku (Rubincam, America's Only Royal Family, p 88). She took on the official title of Liliuokalani (Liliuokalani, Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen, p 55-56).
D. She "succeeded to the crown on January 29, 1891: overthrown as ruling monarch by the soldiers of the American Warship BOSTON ... on 17 January 1893" (McKinzie, Hawaiian Genealogies, vol 1 p 24). "After the overthrow of the Monarchy, the United States did not favor the use of titles from the royal family. Even Queen Liliuokalani was referred to as Mrs. John Dominis" (Castro, High Chief Kalokuokamaile, p 41). She "lived in dignified retirement for nearly a quarter of a century after the overthrow of the monarchy" (Pratt, Keoua: Father of Kings, p 36).
E. She was Queen of the Hawaiian Islands from January 29, 1891 to January 17, 1893 (Hawaiian Chiefs Biographical Abstract).
