LIFE
A. Conflict: Hawaiian Chiefs Biographical Abstract and Oukah, Hawaiian Royal & Noble Genealogies, p 419 state he was born in Hilo, Hawaii about 1794.
B. He was chief of Waialua (Bingham, A Residence of Twenty-one Years in the Sandwich Islands, p xvi).
C. Baptized a Christian with Kaahumanu on 4 Dec 1825 (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 323).
D. At the behest of Kamehameha, he reluctantly wed Piia, who was many years older and "heavily built and not prepossessing in appearance." The couple was among the first to be married by missionary Mr. Bingham. Their favorite dwelling was at Waialua, Oahu (Pratt, Keoua: Father of Kings, p 46-48). She was Kaahumanu's sister (Castro, High Chief Kalokuokamaile, p 14).
E. After Piia passed away, he found Owana, who was half his age, but "that did not mar the match" (Pratt, Keoua: Father of Kings, p 50).
Conflict: Pukui, Hawaiian Genealogies, p 31 indicates Laanui married Puohu. However, his son Gideon Kailipalaki married Puohu Carsley. This could be a mistake rather than a coincidence.
F. "Prince Laanui was a man who was physically attractive, and had a mind which raised him far above most others of his time" (Oukah, Hawaiian Royal & Noble Genealogies, p 421).
