Obituary from the Hendricks Pioneer:
Pastor Harold Schafer officiated at the funeral of Mrs. Ingvald Modtland of Ivanhoe held at the Calvary Lutheran church at Hendricks Thursday, Feb 23, 1961. A family service was held at the church parlors. Mrs. M. A. Ericksen sang a solo, "One Sweetly Solemn Thought" and Pastor Schafer spoke comfortingly from the text Eph. 3:20-21. For the funeral Pastor Schafer used the text I Sam. 20:1-3 using as his topic, "There is but a step between me and death". The Calvary male quartette sang, "Some Day We'll Understand", and Mrs. Teddy Mathison sang, "God Will Take Care of You".
The pallbearers were Adolph Mathison, Alvin Pederson, Eddie Ronning, Lowell Sagmoe, Bennie Thoreson, and Adolph Trooien. Burial was in the Hendricks cemetery.
Beulah Louise Digre was born Nov. 19, 1911, the youngest daughter of Lars and Bertha Digre. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
She made her home with her parents on their farm southeast of Hendricks until she was united in marriage to Ingvald Modtland on Dec. 10, 1932. They started farming north of Astoria, SD., later moving to Astoria. They moved to Ivanhoe in 1945 and have made their home there since.
In the fall of 1958, they were given a surprise silver anniversary by their friends. On Saturday, Feb. 18, 1961, Beulah was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage in the afternoon, from which she died that evening at the Hendricks hospital without regaining consciousness.
To this union were born nine children, seven girls and two boys: Elaine (Mrs. Fred Browning), Loretta, Iva Dell, Donald, Arnold, Helen, Linda, Sandra and Diane, all of whom survive their mother. Mrs. Browning and Iva Dell reside in California, while the others have been making their home with their parents.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Edgar and Nels. She is survived by her husband, Ingvald, and all of the children: two granddaughters; two sisters, Anna (Mrs. Sivert Hindooien) and Bertha (Mrs. Lars Aune); one sister-in-law, Mrs. Randina Digre; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends. She will be sorely missed in the home.
There were friends in attendance from the communities of Ivanhoe, Lake Benton, Marshall and Cottonwood, Minn., Astoria and Sioux Falls, SD and Milford, Iowa.
