John Cortis was born about, 1649. In June 1673, John "Courties," aged about 24, and his brother Zachariah, testified in court.Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County Edited by George Francis Dow Transcribed and Abstracted from the Original Manuscript by Harriet S. Tapley. Salem, Mass.: Essex Institute Vol. I- 1911 to Vol IX -1975 [http://salem.lib.virginia.edu/Essex/vol5/images/essex215.html Vol 5 p.215 (1916)] His parents [[Curtis-2803|Zaccheus Curtis]] and Joanna lived in Salem at the time. His mother may have been [[Corwithin-1|Joanna Corwithin]] but this maiden name is unproven.
The family immigrated from England in 1635 and first settled in Salem, Massachusetts. John and Mary lived in Topsfield, where John was elected tythingman in 1680, 1695 and 1704; constabel in 1698, He served as juryman in 1692/3, 1696/7, 1711, and 1715 and grand juryman in 1703. He was selectman for the town of Topsfield in 1706. He was corporal of the local militia in 1690, and attained the rank of sergeant about 1711. Mary joined the Topsfield church in 1685 and John in 1714.
John Curtis' will of March 19, 1717/18, was admitted to probate on April 16, 1718. He left his estate to His wife, Mary, sons Samuel, John, Thomas and Ephraim, daughters Sarah Smith, Elizabeth Gould, Hannah Gould, Rebecca Smith, Phebe Towne, Abigail Towne, Mary Kenney and Hepsibah Curtis and granddaughters Hannah Smith and Martha Gould, were beneficiarys. His son, Samuel, was the executor.
